Several Terraria 1.1 Features Revealed!

Right now, Terraria is at version 1.0.5, which introduced potions among a bunch other stuff. A while back, a developer blog post revealed that version 1.0.6 is coming with better inventory management. It seems that the company behind Terraria, Re-Logic, has its own story to reveal: A glimpse at Terraria 1.1! ^^
I don’t want to give too many spoilers, but there are going to be a series of events that add several new ores (yes, cobalt is one of them), a new biome that we’ve dubbed as “the anti-corruption,” and at least one new boss. The entire world will be put in to hard mode, and fighting back the corruption will be a lot more involving/rewarding. You’ll probably want to avoid this unless you don’t mind the possibility of your town being destroyed during invasions. >:|
My overall goal for 1.1 is to add a lot more character/world progression and provide some actual end game content. Hopefully after seeing how it turns out, you guys will cut me a bit of slack for the rocket boot change, haha. This is all quite a ways out, though.
New Ores! Which means new Armor Set, and probably a Weapon Set! A new biome to explore and AT LEAST one boss! New boss means at least another set of armor/weapons. Also, End Game Content! At last something better to do than slaughtering zombies!

I'm definitely excited about these changes. Any thoughts?

I've got a House. Now what?!

"When in doubt: Dig." ~Survival 101

Terraria Armors by *deadinsane on deviantART

You've got a house! (If you don't, here's part one of this Survival 101 posts) What now? You need to prepare for the Corruption by upgrading your ARMOR!

Q: What's the corruption? It's a Biome that spreads wherever there's an abundance of Ebonstone. Normally, each Terraria world have two Corruption Areas, one on each side of the map. The normal spawns are replaced with nastier Eater of Souls and Devourers, thorns grow in the land and only the higher tier pickaxes can mine Ebonstone.

Q: Why would I go there? Two things: Shadow Orbs (contains treasure) and Demon Altars (can create boss summoning items, which drop treasure.) Also, the high spawn rate of monsters there can be quite profitable. So, let's get to it~!

1.) The first step is to get the Merchant NPC. Just build another house, preferably connected to your first one (The guide's house). Don't forget the furniture (Chair, Table and Light Source) as well as the walls. Now, while we're waiting for the NPC to spawn..

2.) Stock up on gels and wood. You're gonna create a bunch of torches and a ton of wooden platforms, so chop down those trees! Kill those slimes! Try to plant some acorns too so that you won't run out of wood.

Q: The Merchant won't spawn! If you have built your house correctly, then you'd just have to be patient. He won't spawn when you're near (NPCs are shy), so let's just continue to the third step!

3.) DIG!

Q: What?
 DIG!
Q: Really? Yeah! It's easier to dig down near your spawn point for easy access, but here are a few things to looks out for:
  • A steam engine-like sound. That's a Giant Worm. Many characters have died to this beast, but here's a technique to help: Don't try to follow it. Instead, stand your ground and don't stop swinging your preferred weapon. This will lure the worm to you, and hopefully you'll bash it's fragile head in when it shows up.
  • Pots. They contain coins and BOMBS. These are very useful in sticky situations. speaking of sticky situations: Bomb + Gel = Sticky Bomb.
  • Chests! These are quite uncommon, so keep an eye out for these. Also, red stone hearts will increase your total HP, if you've got a hammer to chisel it out.
  • Ore! We're aiming for Iron and Silver. Copper is not really a good upgrade since I found out that silver is a lot better. Try to get the Gold Ores too, but don't expect to craft armor out of those anytime soon.
  • And last but definitely not the least: Cobwebs!
4.) When you get at least 50 Cobwebs, find a nice level ground preferably near a resource such as glowing mushrooms. Build yourself an outpost, which will serve as your secondary respawn point when adventuring near the area.

You can build a bed (respawn point) by creating a workbench, then turning your 50 Cobwebs into 5 Silk, which can be crafted into one bed. Don't forget to right click the bed to set it as you current spawn location.

Q: My Merchant has "moved in"! Yey! Journey back to the surface then! Here's a checklist of things that you'd craft:
  • Workbench (reuse your first one if you can.)
  • Furnace (20 Stone Blocks + 4 Wood + 3 Torches)
  • Buy an Anvil from the Merchant, or craft one if you think you have excess Iron Ores (15 Iron Ores to 5 Iron Bars to 1 Anvil)
  • Your priority is Iron Pickaxe (36 Iron Ores to 12 Iron Bars + 3 Wood) and an Iron Broadsword (24 Iron Ores to 8 Iron Bars). Save your more precious ores for Armor.
  • If you have a lot of Silver Ores (300, to be exact) you can skip the Iron Armor upgrade and just smelt 300 Silver Ores into 75 Silver Bars, into a full set of Silver Armor.
  • Iron is a lot more common than Silver. You only need 225 Iron Ores for a full set of Iron Armor.
  • Try to create a Gold Pickaxe or a Gold Broadsword / Gold Bow if you have enough Gold Ores.
5.) If you don't have enough ores, just go down to your underground outpost and start digging. When you have decent armor and weaponry, we'll head out to the corruption!

Ok, that's it for this post~ A very long one at that :( Anyway, see you tomorrow!

The "Berserker" Build

Muramasa
Shadow Helm
Shadow Armor
Shadow Boots
Feral Claws
Feral Claws
Cobalt Shield
Obsidian Skull / Band of Regen
Obsidian Skull / Band of Regen
The Berserker Build relies on its insane attacking speed plus the fact that the Muramasa swings like a pickaxe: Just hold the mouse button and it'll go slashing. This is one of the very first sets that becomes available to a player in Terraria. Shadow Armor is fairly easy to get and only the Muramasa poses a significant challenge to acquire.

The build already has max attack speed, but the average defense values of the shadow armor needs a bit of help through Obsidian Skulls and/or Bands of Regen. Also, since you'd need to get to slashing range the Cobalt Shield will protect you from knockbacks.

Building the Set

The Shadow Armor set is one of the easier sets to build- I got it right after crafting the Silver Armor. You just have to kill the Eater of Worlds once, which will drop a piece after dying plus a bunch of Demonite Ores and Shadow Scales. Smelt the Demonite Ores into Bars, then combine with Shadow Scales to craft the remaining pieces.

The Feral Claws can be founf in the underground Jungle- find your world's jungle aboveground, then dig straight down. You'll begin seeing "Shrines" made of Bricks with a single chest inside. On one of those chests is the Feral Claw.

Obtaining the Muramasa is going to be chore: Step one is to defeat Skeletron. Then explore the dungeon, one of the chests within is going to contain the sword. OR you can do this:

The remaining accessories are fairly easy to obtain, and mixing and matching them would be up to the individual player. The Cobalt Shield and the Bands of Regen can be found in Dungeon Chests, while the Obsidian Skulls needs 20x Obsidian pieces each.

Using the Build

Using the Berserker Build vs. the environment is overkill. Blood Moons and Goblin Armies will be annihilated by this build, and the underground, dungeon, jungle and even corruption creeps is no match against it. Hell creeps will prove more resilient, but once you get close and personal they'll die too.

Against boss monsters on the other hand is another matter. Both the Eye of Cthulu and Eater of Worlds can be killed easier with a ranged weapon, and there are better builds for fighting with ranged weapons. The Skeletron is doable, but you'd need stacks of potions since you're at sword range and will be constantly taking hits.

But this build shines the most on PvP. With a proper strategy to compensate for your lack of mobility, its easy to chop players with this build's insane attack speed. You can modify the accessories for a bit of mobility with Rocket Boots or Anklet of the Wind while sacrificing defense, just make sure that the Feral Claws and maybe even the Cobalt Shield remain equipped.

I guess that's it for the Berserker Build~ Until next time guys, peace out ^^

H2DT: Kill Eater of Worlds!

How to Die Trying.. to Kill Eater of Worlds!

I know. I suck at killing boss monsters :( But anyway, here's my attempt on killing the Eater of Worlds. I try to explain what the hell I'm trying to do on YouTube Annotations, but here's the gist:

1.) Put a bed near your Arena so that you can magic mirror out of the corruption easily. This is a must when you summon Eater of Worlds by breaking a Third Shadow Orb, since that long corrupted tunnel upwards WILL kill you.

2.) Eater of Worlds needs at least two blocks wide of anything in order to be able to tunnel through.

3.) Don't try to "surf" the boss unless you have speed enhancing equipment (Hermes Boots, Necro Armor) and a weapon that goes through stuff (Ball of Hurt, Space Gun)

4.) Aim for the head. Try to shoot straight down when you know the worm is going straight up. Don't forget to dodge (and quaff potions).

5.) Avoid getting 'encircled' by the worm. You can use grappling hook to get out quickly (which I forgot to use in the video).

6.) Enjoy the Loot! Eater of Worlds drops both Demonite Ores and Shadow Scales, as well as a Shadow Armor piece! The Nightmare Pickaxe (Smelt 48 Demonite Ores to create 12 Demonite Bars + 6 Shadow Scales) can break Ebonstone (those rocks at the corruption) as well as Meteorites.

Until next time, Shut up and Dig!

Survival 101: First Timer's Checklist

noob: Yay! I installed Terraria
*creates a new world and character*
noob: Now what?
*after a few minutes*
noob: This is boring
*a few more minutes.. Night falls.*
noob: WTH?! This is hard!
*noob's character is slain*
*Guide dies.. Laughing.*
The transcript above is a typical first timer's experience in the worlds of Terraria. Here's a step-by-step checklist on what to do the first time you create a character and a world. Experienced players: Please read on and review this post, you might pick up a trick or two ^^;

1.) Familiarize yourself with the controls. Specifically, learn how to move while switching items. You can either use the number keys or the mouse wheel to do so- pick one and stick with it.

2.) Take a good look around. This is your initial spawn point: when you die, you will respawn here.

Q: Can I change my respawn point? Yes, when you gain access to Cobwebs. Right now, not yet.

The guy with you is the Guide NPC, and its your job to protect him. He will assist you with various tips by clicking on him. The initial spawn point is ALWAYS at a Forest Biome, which means that there should be trees (and bunnies) near you.

3.) Press Esc. That's your Inventory. You can move things around, but only the top set of boxes are usable while playing. On the right side of the screen, you can see your Social and Equipped Helmet, Shirt and Pants, as well as 5 Accessory slots.

Q: What's the difference between the Social and Equipment Sets? The Social Set are for looks only- it overrides the look of your Equipment Set. HOWEVER! The Equipment Set provides the stats (such as defense, +% Atk speed, etc.) So you may encounter someone wearing Copper Armor who can tank bosses, since he's got Meteor Armor equipped beneath!

Notice that when your inventory is open, things still move in the background. Terraria is not meant to be paused. There's a way to freeze the game when you're playing Single Player, but not on Multiplayer.

4.) Gather resources. The first order of business is to create a House before nightfall.

Q: Why? Because Zombies and Flying Demon Eyes spawn at night, which might kill you or the guide.

Ok, how do we do this. First of all, chop some wood. Equip your Axe, and swing at the bottom center part of the trees. It will take a few swings because of the level of your axe, but it'll go down. Repeat until you have a hundred or so wood (check your inventory). While chopping trees, you'll notice some slimes. Kill them- you'd need the gel that they drop for torches.

Q: I found some Acorns and Mushrooms! You can plant acorns to create trees, as long as it is two blocks away from anything else (both sides) and have enough vertical space. Mushrooms heal you for twenty HP (a whole heart).

5.) Start building a House. A House is defined as a fully enclosed 4x8 space with background walls with a chair, table and a light source. Begin by laying down the floor, then a wall going up to the ceiling, and a space for a door. The door is exactly the same size as your character (3 blocks). Nothing fancy.

Next, place a workbench outside the house- you'd need all the space you can get inside. If you check your inventory, you'll notice that the crafting panel at the left side suddenly has a lot of new stuff. Craft a set torches (one set has three torches, you only need 1) a door, a chair and a table. Create Wood Walls and start walling off the inside background of your house, before placing the door, chair and table in. Place a torch inside the house.

If done correctly, your guide should move in before the zombie arrive.

Q: Help! The guide is NOT moving in, and its night already! Check for cracks in the background wall, make sure that the torch is inside the house, and that nothing is blocking the door from the inside OR the outside.

I guess that's that for this Survival Guide. I'll post more later.

Oh great, Its.. Yet Another Terraria Blog

Ok, so what's the deal here?

Well, I got sick and took a few days off. Having nothing to do, I surfed the net until I saw this game called Terraria. Let's just say that I got precious few hours of sleep for the rest of my days off. After experimenting for a bit, I decided to journal what I learned about the game in a blog. Of course, in a true blogger's fashion, I cannot decide on the blog's title so I guess I just typed randomly when I created this one~

So, let's get the basics out of the way so that I can post something more exciting! :D

1.) What is Terraria? Basically, Terraria is Minecraft and Spelunky's love child- in the sense that it has Spelunky's 2d vertical feel with the crafting mechanics of Minecraft. It can be classified as a sandbox game.

2.) How do I get the game? Steam.

3.) WHAT?! It costs money?! Yes. $9.99 USD, to be exact. (Or about 440 Php in my local currency)

4.) Can my PC/Laptop/Netbook handle the massive and breathtaking graphics of Terraria? Yes. Here's the system requirements:

  • OS: Windows Xp, Vista, 7
  • Processor: 1.6 Ghz
  • Memory: 512MB
  • Hard Disk Space: 200MB
  • Video Card: 128mb Video Memory, capable of Shader Model 1.1
  • DirectX®: 9.0c or Greater

5.) HELP! It doesn't run! Ok, here's some basic troubleshooting. First, make sure that you have .NET 4.0 installed, which you can get here. Then check if you have the XNA Framework 4.0 installed, which you can get here. You shouldn't have any problems if those two are installed properly.

6.) Does it run on a Mac? Yes.

7.) Does it run on Linux (Ubuntu/Arch/Puppy/whichever flavor)? Sadly, No. Even the server software doesn't work, which sucks. You can rig it work with wine though. Good Luck.

8.) How's the multiplayer? A lot like Diablo 2's. You can take your character, his full inventory and his piggy bank (Yes, only the piggy bank) to another person's world. PvP looks like fun though.

9.) How do I host a multiplayer session? For local network (over lan cables or wireless), just start TerrariaServer.exe on your Terraria folder and follow the instructions. Get your ip address (start > run > cmd > ipconfig), double check your (and your client's) firewall and make sure that port 7777 (or whichever port you chose) is good, then allow your server to start the host. At the client(s), just choose Multiplayer then type the IP and Port of the server.

10.) How about Multiplayer over the internet? A bit more complicated involving services like Hamachi. I haven't tried it yet so.. Here's a tutorial.

11.) Ok, I got the game running and have created a world and a character. Now what? Wait for my next post ^^; Anyway, just experiment for your first world and try to survive the night~
