I know. I suck at killing boss monsters :( But anyway, here's my attempt on killing the Eater of Worlds. I try to explain what the hell I'm trying to do on YouTube Annotations, but here's the gist:
1.) Put a bed near your Arena so that you can magic mirror out of the corruption easily. This is a must when you summon Eater of Worlds by breaking a Third Shadow Orb, since that long corrupted tunnel upwards WILL kill you.
2.) Eater of Worlds needs at least two blocks wide of anything in order to be able to tunnel through.
3.) Don't try to "surf" the boss unless you have speed enhancing equipment (Hermes Boots, Necro Armor) and a weapon that goes through stuff (Ball of Hurt, Space Gun)
4.) Aim for the head. Try to shoot straight down when you know the worm is going straight up. Don't forget to dodge (and quaff potions).
5.) Avoid getting 'encircled' by the worm. You can use grappling hook to get out quickly (which I forgot to use in the video).
6.) Enjoy the Loot! Eater of Worlds drops both Demonite Ores and Shadow Scales, as well as a Shadow Armor piece! The Nightmare Pickaxe (Smelt 48 Demonite Ores to create 12 Demonite Bars + 6 Shadow Scales) can break Ebonstone (those rocks at the corruption) as well as Meteorites.
